' To The Lighthouse' - Blog task

Here below is my response on "To The Lighthouse"by Virginia Woolf.

1. Stream  of consciousness is very well used in this novel by Virginia Woolf. BY using this technique, she explains that how our relationships are so complicated. At some extent the novel says about Virginia Woolf’s own experience in her real life. The technique is used that how we think and how we make simple and formal feelings multifarious.

2. Of course, the novel deals with the tribute and critique of the character Mrs. Ramsay. We can say about her tribute as everyone misses her after her death. And we also can compare with Indian Woman who always fulfils the demands of husband and do the work through out the whole day in home and takes care about her child. In another way we can look her as a critique view also as her treatment to her girl child and boy child is different which shows patriarchy in the society.

3.   This novel ‘To The Lighthouse’ symbolizes both the female character Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe as Virginia Woolf. WE all know that how Virginia woolf struggled in her life against the society. Well, there is a line here in this novel, that women can’t write or paint. This sentence, I think someone has told her in her real life. To show that, women can write ,she writes this novel and portrayed Lily Briscoe as a painter.

5.  'Künstlerroman’ is a German term which is about the somebody’s life or Artist’s novel, or we can say which describes development or a struggle of an artist as in ‘To the Lighthouse’ Lily’s character and the novel, itself is a struggle of an artist. She wants to prove her intelligence in front of men.

Modernist poems analysis

Here I am sharing my opinions on following ten modernist poems.

1.) ‘The Embankment‘ - T. E. Hulme

Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy,
In a flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.
Now see I
That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy.
Oh, God, make small
The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,
That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.

First, a short paraphrase of the poem: on London’s Embankment , a ‘fallen gentleman’ reflects on his past and how he found pleasure in worldly social activities and beautiful women – probably courtesans or prostitutes. The phrases like 'hard pavement’, ' star-eaten blanket' reflects the harshness of life seen by poet.

2.) "Darkness" - Joseph Campbell

Darkness
I stop to watch a star shine
in the boghole A
star no longer, but a silver
ribbon of light.
I look at it and pass on.

Poet says that Darkness is itself symbolic. 'Star' is a symbol of prosperity and brightness means that there was some goodness in civilization but now it's all dark. Star is something which we comment with positive energy, great source of light n power. But here poet takes it as A star no longer, but a silver ribbon of light.

3.) 'Image'-  Edward Storer

Forsaken lovers,
Burning to a chaste white moon
Upon strange Pyres of loneliness and
drought.

Forsaken lovers are portrayed here by poet. The lovers are aburning with this so called Victorian good thoughts and belife. Here, poet says that the lovers are being burned by white moon.

4.) "In a station of the Metro"- Ezra Pound
The apparition of these faces in the
Crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough

Ezra Pound described Metro station and people who are on this station. She says that how we become puppets of feeling less life. It talks about the repetitive life of modern people like a living dead.

5.) 'The Pool' - Hilda Doolittle

Are you alive?
I touch you
You quiver trembling like a seafish
I cover you with my net
What are you banded one?

Here water is in pool it's not flowing which symbolises the rottenness of the civilization. Water in sea or in river has life but pool has not. Sometimes we do not understand our own feelings. First it was asked that are you alive or not. Very sarcastically, we can see that no. It is not alive. Because now it is there in the net of somebody. Fish after going in the net, cannot survive for longer.

6.) "Insouciance" – Richard Aldington

In and out of the dreary trenches
Trudging cheerily under the stars
I make for myself little poems
Delicate as a flock of doves
They fly away like whitewinged
Doves.

In this poem, poet compares his poems with dove. Here the words like 'Trudging' and 'cheerily' gives contrasting meaning. These words give the image of life where we are doing many things unwillingly. Poems can not fly but here poet says he has made poems that can fly away like white winged doves. It looks he want to be free.

7.) Morning at the Window- T. S. Eliot

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaid
Sprouting despondently at area gates.
The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passerby with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

The whole poem has negative words. The word 'Rattling' means vibrating, shaking plates and 'Damp' means in low spirits from loss of hope or courage. The fog and twisted faces gives negative glimpse and an aimless smile suggests artificiality of Modern civilization. This poem gives images and symbols of the dead spirit in people.

8.) The Red Wheelbarrow- William Carlos Williams

so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chicken.

Poet has used many symbols here. The first line is colloquial and open in its invitation; the second line, the preposition “upon,” prepares the reader for the specifics to follow. The whole poem is symbolical.

9.) Anecdote of the Jar- Wallace Stevens

I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.
The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.
It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.

The poem is all about Jar. When we refer to the word 'Tennessee' it is connected with a state. It may be an open related to this place. Art may be more beautiful than nature but it can not be  creative as the nature.

10.) ‘l (a‘E. E. Cummings

l(a... (a leaf falls on loneliness)
l(a
le
af
fa
ll
s)
one
l
iness

Poet has beautifully captured the image of falling leaves in the poem.. The fragmentation of the word loneliness is especially significant, since it highlights the fact that that word contains the word one. So here poet compares fall of leaf with life of people.

Postcolonial movies review

Movie Review : The Reluctant Fundamentalist

During the discussion of post colonial study we have watched the film 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' which was directed by Meera Nair. The film narrates the life of one Pakistani who is capable to work among American people but just being a Pakistani he suffered a lot and consider as a citizen of second world. His self respect was  vanished with his clothes. He become victim of situation and it's made great impact on him. An educated person is considered as terrorist who is actually a teacher but  he needs more security for him because other want to kill him and this security made his frame as terrorist. This movie is directed by Mira Niar and it is based on the novel with the same title written by Mohsin Hamid. The main theme of the movie is how Muslim's were disrespected after the attack of 9/11. Here the protagonist Changez Khan goes to America to earn money. He makes friend fall in love with American lady. But after the attack of 9/11,  his colleagues started misbehaving with him. We can see a postcolonial aspect here when the Muslims are disrespected by the Americans. So the movie is a very well depicted and arranged with different incidents. Overall it is a good depiction of Muslims conflict towards the Americans. So of course it is a worth to watch this movie.

Movie Review :  Midnight’s Children

Midnight's children is the movie made from the novel with the same title which is written by Salman Rushdie. The movie deals with the political history like partition of India and Pakistan. Here with this writer adds his imagination by putting magic realism in this. In this movie,  we can see that two boys,  Saleem and Shiva born on the  independence night. All the children who got birth in midnight  of that night gets the power of telepathy. But here a Christian nurse named Marry changed  both children. So here we can see a postcolonial aspect by showing Christianity is superior over the Hindu and Muslim religion.

Magic realism is really presented well here in this movie. Here,  Parvati saves first Saleem's life and then her child's life by magic. In this movie all characters are portrayed well specially Saleem,  Shiva and Parvati.

The film also talk about class of the people. Marry is just a nurse but she is motherly figure for
protagonist. She  become the reason for suffering of Saleem and at the last she is introduced as mother just like English people believe that they have helped India in development. At the last three of them live like a family where Christian mother, Muslim father and Hindu son. It's seems like

" Dreams are lost in the melting pot"

The movie is all about the conflict which Saleem  is doing again and again. The movie is good according to the literature aspects but its not for a fun or for all generations. Some movies have a different class to watch so it is one of them.

The Waste Land

1. Sometimes, when we try to compare two things, we came to know that they both were not wrong as they both were right in their opinions.Nietzsche identified objective and valueless 'knowledge' and the chaotic inner world of modern humanity. Übermensch is a Garman word, it means Above-Human or Superman. It is character which introduce by Nietzsche in his work that mention here. T. S. Eliot describes in The Waste Land human subject not of judgment and reason but desires, primitive forces and unconscious motivations.

2.Freud gave importance to free outlet of basic instinct. To fulfill it is more important. It is basic desire. So there is nothing wrong. Which was earlier believe to be. But this freedom which Western society into chaotic life. But this thing lead them towards spiritual degradation, people burning with lust, spiritual draught, chaos in society. Here T. S. Eliot has written that “salvation of man lies in the preservation of cultural tradition to revive faith in god- he writes like this and gave solution to preservation of cultural tradition. Thus, both Freud and Eliot gave their views. It is true that free vent to the repressed primitive lead to happy life, but it should be in limited way. The real problem is that Freud had not told what people are doing. So both things are important, but in its limit.

3. Here T. S. Eliot comes with words likes In brihadaranyaka Upanishad Datta. Dayadhvam. Damyata. It is interpreted as "Datta" by men which means "give" as men are naturally avaricious. the sound as "Dayadhavam" which means "compassion" as they are cruel. Eliot concludes the poem by giving the word "Shantih Shanith Shantih”. So here we can see many words related to Indian thoghts.

Deconstruction on ad

Here in this Blog i m trying to Deconstruct Surf Excel Ad " Dagg acheche hai"

1. A Theory used in study of Literary or philosophy which says that a piece of writing does not have just one meaning .Go for Discourse everything has two side . The deconstruction is the theory/practice of reading which questions and claims to subvert or undermine the assumption that the system of language provides grounds that adequate to establish the boundaries, the coherence or unity, and the determinate meanings of the literary text.

2.   As we Know that children are more prone to accepting advertisements as truthful, accurate, and unbiased than adults are. Adults are able to recognize that the purpose of advertising is to persuade. Children under the age of 6 have difficulties separating commercials from regular television programming.

Here this, latest TV commercial ad attempts to promote the values of forgiveness and harmony using the 'Daag achche hai' proposition. Boy walks, he continuously pulls his trousers, which appear to be loose and keep slipping off. On his way, he meets three boys from his school, who laugh at him and as part of a prank, pull down his trousers. They make fun him of him by calling him 'chaddiwale'.

Suddenly, a teacher from the boys' school appears and inquires what's going on. To this, the young boy replies that that they were practicing for the forthcoming sack race. He holds his trousers like a sack and jumps into a pool of mud and dirt. The other boys feel ashamed and as the teacher leaves, apologise to the kid. All three boys then pull down their pants and jump into the mud. It ends with the voiceover saying, "Daag achche hai."

What the negative as well as wrong impression from this ad is that students leading towards Bad thing. Tag which is given to this ad looking forward for another idea that Why we make Daag on our Self.

School children become addict to watch the advertisement. So majority of their study time is occupied for entertainment programme rather than extra circular activities like sports and games. Advertisement informs the public about their need and influences the living standard according to pattern and customs. It brings the people to the scientific way of living than the traditional system. It straightens the parent’s child relationship in the family where parents are wheat straightens the parent’s child relationship in the family where parents are employed.

It changes the attitude and behavior of the day to day life. It influences the people towards bad habits by seeing the advertisement. It tempts the low income group towards luxury life. It creates the image of personality and prestige.

Structuralist and it's methods.

Structuralist and It's methods.

Structuralism is a form of criticism in  which we can  understand a work of art in context of the structure which have genre, culture and language. Here I want to discuss  Gerard Genette’s  Narratology in which he described five main concept that is in the Structure  like  Order, mood , Frequency , Duration and Voice. Gerard Genette empathetically defines Structuralism as a method is based on the study of structures wherever they occur. Here I want to give an example of the movie “ Garv “ in which we have already protagonist in jail as he had committed a crime. After it flashback came and at the end we came to know that why he had committed a crime. It is a event arranged in B1 (discovery), A2 (flashback), C3 (resolution). Now I want to  give an another example of  movie “ Vintage Point “. Here at once president of America shot and a bomb blast happened in the ground It happened between  12:00 pm to 12:15pm. After it director showed us different kind of people that what they were doing between 12:00 pm to 12:15. So it is a example of frequency in which an event can occur once and be shown  times (repetitive).

Figurative Analysis of a Poem " Mane Game "

Figurative Analysis of a Poem " Mane Game "

A Poem “ Mane Game” Written by Ramesh Thakkar. He is a Gujarati Writer . This Poem Consist 19 lines. This is a Very Short and Interesting one but it is difficult to understand by first reading.

In the beginning of the poem a poet says that he meets with so many people every day at near a street. But he finds variedness in all the faces. As we know that all human beings have same colour of blood, that is red. But by thoughts they all are different. Here, poet sees different photocopies in every faces but it has a glimpse which speaks thousand of words. Now , poet compares different images with computerized print which is full of variously.

In this section poet talks about modern time. Here, He says that there are so many images download via internet and its seems like a lively image. But in the second line poet gives a sign that downloaded images have not feeling emotions , and nature of human beings. So, here we may find paradox. At the end it is difficult , to justify what poet wants to convey because it is philosophical think. He likes familial response at street. A response which have a true identity of human. At the end poet gets feelings that is full of acquainted.

Here in this Poem we can find metaphors like Internet, Computer, and Xerox.

To wind up, this poem we may say that in this poem poet presents the idea about artificially and the lack of original emotions, feelings of humans with the example of computer and internet.
